Why 13th December? It’s a darkening – near dark – moon, not near the Solstice, and I can’t feel inspired. In fact it feels all out of kilter to me, just ‘wrong’. My projection is druidry being run by commercial interests (who got the dibs on Stonehenge before we did?). And I’d so love to be there – if it were the next weekend. How about a weekday?

Snowleopard, thanks for your comments – and I have some sympathy with your perspective.
Prior to last midwinter, traditionally, the Gorsedd has always gathered on the Sunday immediately prior to the winter solstice, and again on traditional ‘Midsummer’s Day’ (24th June) each year. We had asked for access on the 20th but were refused by English Heritage who told us that they could not allow us access so close to the date of open access due to the vasty increased numbers attending on that day and the risk of damage to the ground within the stones so close to that date. We were unable to negotiate access on a date any closer to the solstice, as English Heritage now have a policy of not allowing any access up to 7 days prior to midwinter open access. We are considering other options or future years, and requesting a date shortly after open access has been considered. As for commercial interests I can assure you that there are no such interests undertaken by the Gorsedd; if any funds remain after costs are covered they are donated to The Druid Network Tree Planting Fund.
